Written by his daughter, Stephanie Lynn Schutt

When I think of a hometown hero, I don’t picture someone looking for recognition or praise. I picture my dad — steady, hardworking, humble, and always showing up for the people who matter most.

My dad, Patrick Lynn Schutt, was born on January 6, 1957, and raised right here in Shawano, Wisconsin. He is a proud member of Shawano High School’s Class of 1975 and someone whose roots run deep in this community. This is the place that shaped him — and the place he has spent his life giving back to.

In 1975, right after high school, my dad answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Navy. From July 5, 1975, to January 5, 1979, he served honorably on active duty, including time aboard the USS Mount Vernon (LSD-39). While stationed far from home, he carried Shawano with him — the values of hard work, loyalty, and doing the right thing even when it’s hard. His service earned him the National Defense Service Medal, but what it really gave him was a lifelong sense of duty and integrity.

When his military service ended, my dad came home — not to slow down, but to build. He earned an Associate’s Degree in Welding Technology from Northeastern Wisconsin Technical College and went on to dedicate decades of his life to manufacturing, production, safety, and leadership. He didn’t just hold jobs — he led people. He solved problems. He made workplaces safer, better, and stronger. And he did it quietly, without needing recognition, because that’s who he is.

But to me, his most important roles were never on a résumé.

He is a devoted husband, a loving father to myself and my brother, Brandon, and the kind of man who teaches by example. He showed us what responsibility looks like, what consistency looks like, and what it means to work hard, keep your word, and treat people with respect. He taught us that leadership isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room — it’s about being the one others can count on.

My dad has always been there — in the big moments and the small ones — with his steady presence, dry sense of humor, and love for family gatherings, community events, and music. His lifelong love of Elvis Presley is woven into so many memories of our family’s life together.

To our community, Patrick Lynn Schutt is a veteran, a leader, and a lifelong contributor.

To me, he is simply Dad — my example, my foundation, and my hero.

And that is why he will always be my hometown hero.
